Week of 1.1.24 Update

On our inaugural day, the Speaker outlined priorities for the upcoming session. In healthcare, a commitment was made to address challenges with innovative, provide-led solutions, steering away from generic governmental handouts. Also, our state's robust financial position remains strong. I feel this gives us an opportunity to future reform our tax law be eliminating the income, grocery, and/or the gas taxes. This forward-thinking approach aligns with our vision for a prosperous and equitable future. As we embark on this legislative journey, we must seek to implement common sense solutions that will continue to shape a brighter and more promising future for Mississippians.

On a note of resilience, I must share that early Wednesday morning, the Capitol faced a challenging situation with a bomb threat, leading to the evacuation of the building. I commend the swift response of the MS Department of Public Safety and our Law Enforcement Officers who conducted a thorough sweep, ultimately decalring the premises safe around 11 a.m. While facing adversity, the Chamber remained strong. Regrettably, a similar threat occurred on Thursday morning, affecting not only the Capitol but also the MS Supreme Court and other Hinds County buildings. It's heartening to know that these threats, reported in multiple states, were determined to be hoaxes by the FBI.

Next Week

Next week, we anticipate that all members will be given their committee assignments. Much of the work of the Legislature is carried out in committees, where issues are studied, policy is formed, and changes are made to legislation before they come to the floor for consideration by the full House. I asked to be named to committees important to Desoto County, including Transportation (I-55 widening) and Appropriations (infrastructure), but committee placement is largely based on seniority.

Also next week, the Governor will be sworn in on January 9th. If you are coming down next were or anytime while we are in session, please let me know. I would love to honor you on the floor and show you around the capitol.
