A Strong Start to the 2025 Regular Session

Dear Friends & Neighbors,

As we kick off this legislative session, I want to thank you for the honor of representing Desoto County and North Mississippi. This month has been filled with meaningful engagements, legislative milestones, and opportunities to serve our communities. Here’s a look at the highlights from January:

Meeting with Our Municipality Leaders

This month, I met with municipal leaders from Desoto County and North Mississippi to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our cities. We focused on my proposed HB1265, the Sales Tax Diversion Study, which seeks to reform the Department of Revenue’s practices. This initiative ensures that cities receive the sales tax revenue they deserve to address local needs. I remain committed to empowering our local governments.

Addressing Wastewater Challenges in Desoto County

Collaborating with Desoto County leaders, I’ve been addressing the critical DCRUA wastewater litigation issue. Following a federal court ruling that prevents Desoto County from using Memphis wastewater facilities, I’ve been working diligently to secure resources to build an independent system. This infrastructure is vital for the future of our community.

Making a Wish Come True

One of the most inspiring moments this month was fulfilling Hunter’s wish to be a soldier for a day. Hunter, a young man who defeated cancer, joined my National Guard family in a special ceremony. His warrior spirit is a reminder of the resilience and strength within our community.

Supporting First Responders

I attended the First Responders Caucus meeting to discuss the challenges and opportunities our first responders face. I am proud to support these men and women who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our communities.

Military Affairs Appropriations Hearing

At the Military Affairs Appropriations hearing, we discussed the STRONG Act, a measure aimed at improving recruitment and retention in the Mississippi Army National Guard (MSNG). As a veteran with over two decades in the MSNG, I understand these challenges firsthand and will continue to advocate for our servicemembers.

Welcome Home, MS National Guard

I had the honor of welcoming home over 200 National Guard servicemembers who served during the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, D.C. These outstanding Mississippians exemplify duty, honor, and service.

Meeting with Pro-Life Mississippi

I met with Janis from Pro-Life Mississippi to discuss supporting families and encouraging fathers in the home. I remain committed to promoting a culture that values life and strengthens the family unit.

Improving Community Safety

I had a productive meeting with Desoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle and his team. We discussed improving public safety and finding innovative ways to assist community members facing mental health challenges.

Supporting Small Businesses

This month, I attended the ribbon-cutting for Power Media Solutions, the newest business in Southaven. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and I am proud to advocate for policies that help them thrive.

Passing HB1: Transforming Mississippi’s Economy

This month, the house passed HB1, a transformative bill that eliminates the state income tax, reduces the grocery tax, and positions Mississippi as one of the most business-friendly states in the union. This legislation is a bold step toward enabling Mississippians to achieve the American Dream.

Legislative Progress: Bills for a Better Mississippi

I have introduced several bills this session to support our cities, strengthen our troops, bolster public safety, and boost economic opportunities. Highlights include:

HB1265: Creating a Sales Tax Diversion Study Committee to ensure our cities have the funds for our local infrastructure and projects.
HB1268: Establishing the Mississippi Save Our Servicemember Task Force to address mental health needs in the military.
HB1321: Launching a Defense Research and Development Program.
HB1278: Creating the Hometown Heroes Home Loan Guaranty Program to help our local heroes (teachers, nurses, and first responders) afford to buy homes in the communities they serve.
HB1279: Establishing the Mississippi JROTC Promise Grant Program to create pathways for our emerging leaders to pursue higher education.
HB1272: Providing a Community Investment Tax Credit for affordable housing development.
HB1276: Revising penalties for texting while driving.
HB1277: Authorizing school resource officers for independent nonpublic schools to protect our children.
HB1274: Enhancing penalties for postal package and credit card crimes.

These initiatives are designed to empower our communities and ensure every Mississippian has the opportunity to succeed.
